Is a Potential Good Time Worth Risking a Potential Boring Time?

Have you ever been approached by a stranger to do something cool and then backed out because, well, they're a stranger.  Mom taught you well.

In the past I’ve been approached to do something interesting and I haven’t ended up doing it because of the risk of it NOT being interesting.  Strangers (being strangers) have no “interesting” track record and thus increase the risk of dissapointment.  The paradox is, in the back of my mind I know that some of my best times of my life have been when risks paid off and where spontaneity has been rewarded, yet each time it’s still a fight to say yes, and take the risk.

Why is that? Because of that 1 time in 20 when things don’t pan out, the promised “interesting adventure” is neither interesting nor an adventure.  That time scares me, mostly because I hate being bored.  So the question becomes is the 1 bad time worth the 20 good times?  I say yes. Hunter S Thomson agrees. Like he always said, “ buy the ticket…take the ride” -  it’s always worth the risk.

Watch me live the paradox as I 'Learn to Sail', #54 on the list of things I want to do before I die.

Duncan.
