Ben Searches For The Perfect Wave In Nicaragua

Filed Under: news — Ben, Dave, Duncan and Jonnie @ 7:58 pm

Just came home from an outstanding trip to Nicaragua where I was working on #92: Learn to Surf (here’s how I got there). I was truly searching for the perfect wave and it wasn’t easy. Somehow I made it though, so I thought I’d put together an easy to follow step-by-step guide so that you can find the perfect wave too. Here’s a photo journal of what it took.

Step 1: Cab (p.s. it’s difficult to ask for a Spanish/English Dictionary without a Spanish/English Dictionary… probably not worth trying)

Step 2: Car (typical Nicaraguan road)

Step 2: Car

Step 2: Car

Step 3: Ferry

Step 4: ‘Chicken Bus’ (p.s. no matter how rocky the ride gets don’t sit on the plastic tubs in the back because you’ll probably break it and have to apologize and negotiate a fair replacement price in broken spanish)

Step 5: Ask a local where the best surf is and convince him to take you there

Step 6: Walk down to the beach and into the water

Wear sunscreen

Travel with a fake moustache

  2. You want surfing beaches? Check out “Robin Z’s” almost 50 surfing reviews on Yelp. Start with “Rincon Beach State Park” & be sure to read “Kongs.” The woman has been surfing since she was just a tadpole. Has some pretty incredible stories. Need an intro? Just tell her “Rachel C” sent you . . . but watch out for the sharks!
