It’s been quiet a week for The Buried Life. First Lohan, then Baberaham, now this..
Yesterday Stephane Dion, Canada’s answer to Barack Obama (and our next Prime Minister.. we hope), came to us looking for help. “How do I reach young people?” he said. “How do I make Canadian kids care like Obama does?”
You gotta stay relevant, we told him. What is your campaign’s stance on the new Facebook changes? Have you talked to Will.I.Am about doing a diddy? Where’s your twitter feed?
Now some people tell the story differently. Some say ‘oh you snuck into his press engagement and got a photo.’ Don’t believe those people. He came looking for help and we gave it to him. It had nothing to do with security saying “No photos guys. Sorry. It’s impossible.” That’s just crazy.
Dion: one of us

Ben’s shirt would be SO much more cool if it had unicorns on it instead of just plain ol’ horses. Mention that to Dion next time; today’s youth are big on unicorns.

Now to be serious. Does / did he really want help? If so, help him to understand that why Obama appeals to the youth of the US is because he represents not only hope, but because he sees that without that hope and leading a nation towards resolution of the problems of the past there is no future. We are screaming down a tunnel to oblivion.
Canada, just like the US and a multitude of other countries, needs to have leadership that is aware that if they don’t make some changes and make them fast, the future is grim. It took us a long time to screw the world up this badly, now we need to fix it fast. We don’t necessarily need a young leader, we need a leader who understands what most young thinking folks have figured out - - we need change. We need to fix problems that have existed for a very long time. Unicorns & shades won’t do it!
We need to listen to wise men (and women). The elders of Okinawa, for instance. Or the American Indian elders. Or a lot of nations that do still respect their elders. We no longer respect opinions of those who have the real experience. Stephane Dion is still young in their eyes. Each of us can start making those changes little by little in our own lives. Listen to the Japanese:
“KAISEN: The Japanese art of making the smallest, subtlest change possible in order to produce real and lasting change, however small. You know you are in kaizen territory when the change you are considering seems absurd, it’s so little.”
Obama is hope & change for the US, but without hope & change from Dion for Canada and leaders from other countries, the whole thing is going “to hell in a handbasket.”
This one isn’t going to fix itself. We have to do it! Hopefully, we will elect leaders who will lead us towards that change, but let’s not sit around waiting for them to do that . . . . let’s start today. Each of us. Small changes.
